One game that has driven me crazy trying to get it to work is Need For Speed 2 Special Edition from, I think, 1998.

Hi, I would like some help getting Titanic, an adventure out of time to work on window 7 laptop…whilst I can get it to run fine…the graphics are poor i.e. rainbow colour…thanks in advance :)

    • BuckoA51 says:

Hi Holly, we have managed to locate a copy of this game and I’ll take a look at it sometime in early February, I’ll let you know here when the article is ready.

    • BuckoA51 says:

Holly, we were able to get Titanic: Adventure out of Time to work perfectly! Here’s the article https://www.play-old-pc-games.com/2013/02/06/titanic-adventure-out-of-time/ Let us know if you have any issues on your PC.

      • Holly says:

Hi, thank you for checking the titanic game for me, I am no further forward however :-( I installed the game link you provided but the visual element is still poor. I changed the settings to 256 640×480 and disabled visual themes. What should the programme compatability mode be? I have it as xp service pack 3?? I’m not sure what you could suggest? :-D

        • BuckoA51 says:

Don’t use any compatibility mode as per the instructions on our page. Did you try the custom installer and the “alt launch” method? Please leave any follow-up comments about this game on the actual Titanic page rather than here, thanks.

i can’t run Star Wars Episode 1 Racer in Windows 7, i tried using Markus
Eggers replacement installer. but when i started the game, i got an error that said: ‘bad install, please reinstall from the original CD’
    or something like that.
i also tried a workaround for Shadows of the Empire for PC.
and that did not work either.
can you look into possibly finding a way to install those games on Windows 7?

  4. triz says:

there was a game i played when i was a kid i think it was a dog but im not 100% sure and you had to move boxes around to get the treat the
, levels got way harder were you had to then push the wooden boxes into water to get to wea you needed to go and im pretty sure there were robots or something that could get you but if you were smart you could trap them

  5. Rhialto says:

It’s a 20yo game, called Iron Helix. Don’t even know if it would run won Windows 7 but would like to give it a try to refresh my memory of it.

  6. megarock58 says:

can you see if there is a way to install and run Star Wars Force Commander on Windows 7 64-bit?

  7. patryckpo says:

    Hello to all.
I would like to ask for Fighting Force, all I know is that it runs (probably) in Windows 95, but in my Windows Vista it doesn’t!
NOTE: Been having problems with Devil Inside, but I updated my Windows Vista with SP1 & 2 and now it runs perfectly, but Fighting Force don’t even open up.

    • BuckoA51 says:

I remember that game on the Playstation! I didn’t realise there was a PC version, I’ll keep an eye out for it.

    • BuckoA51 says:

I can’t get Fighting Force to work either.

      • Gerhalt says:

A little bit late, but still
Both games are totally playable in 7×64, however there’ll be minor issues. Devil Inside is extremely buggy game on its own: its script execution is way too glitchy so I’d recommend saving very often AND into different slots since there are tons of places you could catch random softlock that will screw up any progression. Yeah it’s that bad.
Fighting Force ’95 runs okay but you gonna need some bullshit within your system registry otherwise the game will either keep asking its cd every bloody time you try to run it OR keep telling you it hasnt been properly installed. I dont remember where I used to find that exact registry data but I’m sure you can google it the way I did back then. Hopefully it’s still there somewhere.

  8. Ron Friedman says:

I don’t have the balance of power campaign, and so your installer won’t continue because I can’t insert that CD? Do you have an installer that will let me just install the original CDs 1 and 2?

    THanks!!!!

    -Ron

  9. Weboh says:

I have a game called LEGO Soccer Mania that I have been trying to get to work. It came with a license code that I need to type in to install it, but I lost it. I tried using keys for it that I found online, and those worked to install it, but when I tried to play it gave me an invalid key message. What can I do to make it work?

    • BuckoA51 says:

Unfortunately without the correct CD key there’s not a lot you can do. If by some chance you still have the proof of purchase it might be worth trying to contact the publisher.

      • Weboh says:

Do you know how to make it work with one of the many keys online? It seems like they should work, since they’re valid keys. Or it might be that it can’t verify the key since the server used to verify the keys is dead. Do you know a way around it?

        • BuckoA51 says:

Very sorry but we can’t help with missing/replacement CD keys, game cracks or similar topics!

        • Uber_Supreme says:

Hi, Can you add a game that is called “Need For Speed 3:Hot Pursuit”
It’s an amazing game and Iv’e been searching for a way to install and run the game, but it just doesn’t work on 64-bit machine. However I found a way to play it perfectly by using VEG’s patch. Here is a link http://veg.by/en/projects/nfs3/

And it run so smoothly it’s unbelievable :D

  10. Weboh says:

I have an old game called LEGO Racers. The installation went fine, but every time I try to play it on my Windows XP with all the compatibility settings it needs turned on, it crashes my graphics driver, gives me a blue screen, or both. I’ve had it work on a Windows XP computer before, which makes this even more strange. Do you know what I can do to fix it?

  11. Weboh says:

I have an old game called Bugs Bunny Lost in Time. It acted weird when I tried to install it, but I got it to work. The game ran fine… until the next time I started the game. Now each time I pop the disk in, it only gives me an install option, and when I click that, it fails 90% of the way into installation. It won’t even start when I use the shortcut.

  12. Please Im looking for Microsft Fury 3, since you give good instrucctions, and beacause I Have an issue whith this game,,, I can’t make it work in Arcade mode, it allways keep on “pro” mode ( tha plane dsnt return to the horizon line). thanks bye

    • BuckoA51 says:

Hi Daniel, yeah I know that game I’ll give it a go as soon as possible. Windows 8.1 is keeping us busy over at top-windows-tutorials.com but I will be adding more games here soon.

  13. Felix says:

    Hello,

I love this page, really great tutorials for my old games. However I want to ask if you guys can try to get the game “Hercules Action Game” running on a Win7 64Bit /Win8 64Bit system. I habe my copy on the original CD but it didn’t even let me install on a 64Bit system. Would be great to play this old jump and run again.

    Thank you very much.

    • Gerhalt says:

Hey, Felix! I got Disney’s Hercules too and I wanna tell you it’s working just fine in 7×64 at least in windowed mode. You can “install” it manually without any need to use that outdated installer. However the game’s registry dependent so you’ll have to have the very needed subsection of it within yours. It keeps all your custom settings there + your current progress.
Its path within registry is HKLM\software\wow6432node\disney\hercules. It can be created manually at any time but it’s totally required by the game to properly operate & be able to keep your parameters.

Any way you can help me get it working?

Hi! I´m looking for a PC old game I used to play when I was Young. I think it was called “sech sech”. You had to place hexagon tiles in a board and arrange them by color. The strategy was to wait until you had seven tiles together because that gave you a lot of points. I used to play this back in 85 – 90´S. I´ve been searching for it by the name of sech sech, but It doesn´t appear. I´ve also checked a lot of hexagon tiles games, but haven´t found it. Does anyone know what I´m looking for? Maybe it has another name? Can you help me, please? Thanks in advance.

Actually this one works even on Windows 8…
So maybe you could explain your problems…
For now try running in WinXP compatibility mode and see if it helps.

    • Gerhalt says:

TNP runs super smooth in my win7x64 and even better than that: while the game only lets you select 800×600 as a maximum possible reso, you can actually rise it as high as 1280×960! Just type it within your profile cfg file – it’s the bottom line there right next to “video mode”. I believe “vampire” engine, upon which the game’s based, can do up to 4k but that’ll need some binary code hacking since it lacks support for proper height value consisting of more than 3 digits like 1080 & higher.
BTW this easy trick also works for MageSlayer, another top-down “vampire” game from 1997 by Raven Software that’s highly reminiscent of their Hexen dilogy.

    Hello!

What I miss is GTA: Vice City
It’s super problematic on windows 8.1. Widescreen doesn’t work. Found one patch/fix but that only works for 1.0.

Another problematic game is “Desperados: Wanted Dead or Alive”. It’s an awesome directdraw game. Since windows 8 it runs unplayably slow. I didn’t find a proper fix. It only ran with an older version of WineD3D for windows (which still had ddraw.dll in it) But only with corrupted interface graphics.

Can you get EA Sports Rugby 2004 to work properly on Windows 7? It installs and loads, but there’s a whole tribe of glitches that occur and the gameplay is really adversely affected. If you play the game tutorials, you’ll see what I mean. These glitches never showed up back in 2004 when I played the game on a Windows 2000 laptop.

Also – Wiggles from… 2001? I managed to get it to work a year ago or so, but it was a pain in the ass so I think a Tutorial might be worth it.

Got this to work after some more messing around. Windows 7 x64. Go to Documents > My Games > Age of Empires 3 > Users.
Open NewProfile.XML with a code editor (i just used wordpad).
find this line: false and change “false” to “true”.

This puts the game in windowed mode which you can now load the game and make your resolution changes to correct the black screen issue.

      • CoolGuyHB says:

my comment didnt post correctly. the line you are looking for is the setting name: “optiongrfxwindowmode” which is set to false. change this to true. after the game starts go to help and tools and change the resolution and refresh to match your current desktop settings.

Hi there Bucko, is there a way to correctly run Alone in the Dark a New Nightmare?
I have a problem where the game looks all white its a pretty common problem.
I found a solution on Steam to uninstall update KB3000850 and it worked, however Windows updated it self and the game glitched again.
Here is the link it might help http://steamcommunity.com/app/259190/discussions/0/624076027421176497/
I’m using Win 8 32bit and retail version of the game.

By the way I wanted to thank you for the update for Dgvoodoo2 it fixed another game called Nocturne https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nocturne_(video_game) it has a similar problem as Alone in the Dark where the characters are all in white if 3D rendering is enabled.
I tried the new Dgvodoo2 but with no success.

Hi guys, I love the work you are doing with this website, it helped me set up Daytona USA Deluxe, which i haven’t been able to play since I had winXP. Really great site, good job, man. I want to make a request since I’ve been having a very hard time lately trying to get the PC version of Wipeout XL to run properly and while it does render, the speed of the game is way beyond unplayable. Also, it’s a great game and I would appreciate it greatly if i managed to play it again.

    Thanks, Best of luck
P.S. You can make Daytona USA play the ingame music without CD with _inmm.dll

I can install it without any issue, but then I cannot play due to a color glitch.

I am looking to make several old games work on windows 7 and newer PCs. Lego Island, Rollercoaster Tycoon with Corkscrew Follies and Loopy Landscapes, Frogger (1997), Monopoly, Warcraft 2 Battlenet Edition, Warcraft 3 with The Frozen Throne, Worms Armageddon, Sim Ant, Sim City 3000 Unlimited, Sim Farm.

Also I’ve been looking for a game for over 10 years. It has dragon eggs in it and theres little arrow blocks you use to move around and destroy other bricks in a maze type of thing. You move the arrows to destroy bricks and you save the dragon eggs. I remember there was some mathematic equations somewhere in the game as well if I remember right. I played it around the year 1996 on a old PC. Could have been windows 3.1 or windows 95.

I want to be able to use the games fully functional without the need for CDs.

I’ve been trying to install Syberia (CD version) on windows 10. It seems to install normally. I do get an error that pops up toward the end saying “DirectX 8.0a Object Error: unknown error” but after closing the error box it seems to finish installing normally. The problem is when I try to run the game, nothing happens. I’ve tried messing with windows compatibility settings but haven’t had any luck. When I try the reduced screen resolution it would change the resolution for a second before changing back to the original screen resolution. I have tried searching online for solutions but I could only find fixes for errors with the Steam version not the CD one. So I was wondering If you all have ideas or suggestions on getting the game to work. Thanks!

I have 2 requests that I’ve recently been having issues with recently (all on Windows 10 (64 bit version):

The House of the Dead – Comes up with a 16 bit installer error, which I can’t run on my Windows 10 64 bit machine (and I don’t have access to a 32bit PC)

The House of the Dead 3 – Will install but doesn’t seem to do anything when I try to launch the game (just a busy mouse cursor for a second then nothing).

Both of which I can’t see any patches or a work around that actually works (compatibility modes don’t work). Funnily enough, I have The House of the Dead 2 working fine.

In return, I offer advise for Virtua Cop 2 which I had issues installing on Windows 10, and figure others may be stuck like I was:

To bypass the no ssp.ini error, try running the installer with windows program compatibility troubleshooter. Select to run with the recommended settings, and try testing it. You may need to try the test a few times, but it should then run the installer.

Once in the installer, DO NOT change the directory, instead select the install mode you want (minimum or normal) to proceed with the install. Changing the directory will crash the installer and you need to force close it and retry. Once installed, move the folder to the location you want, and re-direct the shortcuts to the new location. The game should load as normal after installation.

    • Scott Miller says:

Found the solution for House of The Dead myself, best answer is in here: https://www.vogons.org/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=42563

My issue with a game is so perplexing I have tried hundreds of things to get Monopoly Tycoon working on Windows Vista/7+ with music. The music works fine on Windows XP but won’t work on Vista. Sorry if it seems too much to ask but I can not, I repeat can not do anything to make it work at all.

    Things I have tried:
    – Direct3D->OpenGL wrappers
    – Compatibility Modes
    – DLL Injection (partially from trying to wrap calls)
    – Reading crash file (titled ‘crash.sav’ which is very creative)

If you can help, it would make my month (I am not exaggerating at all :P), so that I can relive the nostalgic music of Monopoly Tycoon in full HD.
Any help is appreciated if it means I can get one step closer at all to getting it fixed.

    Thank you very much!

    • Chris Rosendorf says:

Have you had any luck in this, and what coding/cracking knowledge have you got?
I, myself, have been looking into this the last 3 days, and tried debugging the cause of the crash when trying to launch it with music enabled.
Apparently it looks at memory address 0, for some reason, when trying to copy data from a pointer, so that is what causes the crash, as far as I know.
Around that area in the exe there are also references to “/gamedata/sound/music/music_intro.wma”.

If you have time/want we could try to collaborate on this? Share knowledge of possible problems and solutions.

      • Timothy says:

Yes!!! Wow, never thought that someone would want to help me :D (and others).
I have found what you discovered with the memory address being at 0. It would be a great pleasure to find out what is going on here exactly…… after the windows audio stack was re-written it seems that the game does not want to find the new stack or something. I am also not a developer of any kind, just a tinkerer :P

      • Timothy says:

There is a fix to make it go past the logo, but the rest of the game does not work yet for some reason. All you have to do is use a resource viewer/hacker (use WinVi) and change the audio extension format from .wma to .wav. Also make sure that your file extensions are not hidden. You have to have an audio file that is the right name and format in the music directory. Save the .exe as a copy from WinVi and then you can test it out.

      • Timothy says:

        Are you there Chris?

        • Chris Rosendorf says:

Ah, honestly had forgotten about trying to get this to work, has there been any update on your side?

I’ll take a look at this again, would be fun to get it working :)

          • Timothy says:

The problem is with DirectShow, the game requires a codec/filter that is present in windows XP. It is the Windows Media Source Filter that is missing.

          • Timothy says:

Also my email address is timpenguinb504@gmail.com
I am investigating how the game reacts under WINE (it gets funky)

          • Timothy says:

I have got the Windows Media Source Filter added back into Windows by swapping out some .dll files from SysWOW64 and registering dxmasf.dll. The next step is to build the filter in a graph and then make the game use it.

      • Timothy says:

I made a tutorial on how to fix the game properly, it actually works! All you need to do is install the filter again.
        https://mcdebugrndmstuff.blogspot.com/2018/10/monopoly-tycoon-directsound-music-fix.html

Hopefully it is a helpful guide. Please let me know if it works for you (tested it on one other fresh machine)

        • Chris Rosendorf says:

I tried it on both my Windows 7 Desktop and my Windows 10 Laptop, both having troubles with registering the DLL in the SysWow64 folder (But it might be my computer, as takeown /f … wasn’t enough to actually allow me to delete the old dxmasf.dll, so I resorted to editing the read, write etc. in security tab for it).

Don’t know why, but I could register the dll from other folders, just not in C:\Windows\SysWow64, giving me the fantastic error:

          “RegSvr32

The module …\dxmasf.dll failed to load.

Make sure the binary is stored …”

          http://puu.sh/BPNEp/46b5dac24f.png

Thanks for your hard work, though, I’ll definitely keep at it, to try and make the game work :)

P.S It still doesn’t work, and crashes at the same place, even after trying to register the dll in DirectShow Filter Manager, when trying to use the dll outside of SysWow64, because of the previously mentioned issue.

          Best Regards

          • Timothy says:

You MUST have drmclien.dll in the SysWOW64 directory. You must also run the DIrectShow Filter Manager as Administrator (or else you run CMD as admin if you want to do it that way).

You must of not been running cmd as administrator to get that error, or you didn’t specify the path. The DirectShow Filter Manager must be running in SysWOW64 (that is why it needs to be run as administrator)

I may just have to make a video tutorial, since it worked for me on Windows 7. I will also test it out on a completely fresh install this time.

Just solved the issue. You are having an issue unrelated to this (it seems like a missing drmclien.dll in syswow)

It is UNBELIEVEABLE that I managed to place an important .dll in the right place without knowing that it fixed ANOTHER issue. The dll that is important for the game to stream audio is the strmdll.dll. Without it you won’t notice much difference in the game’s functionality (generic crash).

We can DM (directly message) each other, what way would suit you best? My Discord is mrpenguinb#2839

I would really like to see Starlancer here ! First to make sure everyone knows about this gem ( probably the best space-fighter game in existence… ) and second because I can’t for the life of me make the sound work on the latest Windows version… Install is pretty straightforward, it even works OOTB on some graphics cards and others need dgVooodoo2 but the sound is always choppy and frankly it’s impossible to play with pleasure.

    Hi guys!

This isn’t so much a request as a public service announcement, as I just discovered to how to get working on Windows 10 one of the more stubborn games out there – Theme Park Inc aka SimCoaster, the final game from legendary studio Bullfrog.

It’s possible you may need a no-CD crack of some sort, so be warned here. Possibly not!

Basically, the reason the game doesn’t run is simply because there are graphics files Windows no longer includes that the game needs. You can get them here: http://dege.freeweb.hu/dgVoodoo2/dgVoodoo2_54.zip (Main page: http://dege.freeweb.hu/dgVoodoo2/dgVoodoo2.html, file “dgVoodoo v2.54”)

Download that, unzip, and copy the .dll files in folder “MS” directly to Theme Park Inc/SimCoaster’s main folder – the one with game.exe in it. Then right click game.exe and choose Properties/Compatibility/Run this program in Windows XP Service Pack 3. Save, Right-click game.exe again, and choose “Run as administrator”.

After doing this, my copy of the game worked perfectly.

Any chance getting Hard Truck 2 (American version) running? I even tried installing it on Windows XP Pro in a VM and it won’t run properly there either. It will looks like it’s installed without issue, but when you try to start a game it doesn’t load any of the graphics besides the cab and background.

I’d love to play it again as I played that version as a kid and loved it. It was glitchy back then too tho haha

I was wondering if it is possible to make the Bricks Of series work in Windows 10. (Bricks of Atlantis, Bricks of Egypt 1&2, Bricks of Camelot. They install and open okay, but no matter what compatibility settings I use, they won’t play. They move super super slow, a few jerky frames at a time. I love those games, and ironically I play them on my Linux P.C. through wine, even though they are unable to run in Windows 10 because of how old they are. About 2004 I believe.

Can you please get Traitor’s Gate, Heavy Gear 2 and Die Hard Trilogy to work on Windows 10? Would be much appreciated.

  173. Jax-Or says:

I’ve tried getting Traitors Gate (1997) working on Windows 10, but can’t because a version of Quicktime isn’t compatible with 64bit operating systems.

EDIT: Good news!! I’ve managed to get Traitors Gate working on Windows 10.

Just make sure you have the latest version of Quicktime installed BEFORE you install the game, or it won’t work because the previous version of Quicktime WILL NOT WORK ON WINDOWS 10.

The game works just fine on Windows 10; aside from some occasional jerkiness in the cinematics, but otherwise, it works.

    Have fun!!

BuckoA51, I have found out how to fix Monopoly Tycoon, Test Drive 6, Ford Racing 2 and probably some other ones I don’t know yet by installing an old codec. No one has found out how to register/install it properly before. There are more details on how to install it for monopoly tycoon here: https://mcdebugrndmstuff.blogspot.com/2018/10/monopoly-tycoon-directsound-music-fix.html
The codec that was missing is the Windows Media Source Filter.

I would like to contribute a “fix” for the first Magic & Mayhem (NOT the Art of Magic). The game works fine on Win. Xp – 7 (and maybe 8 and 10) although it has problems with sounds. Here are the steps to the fix:
    1) Go to “Sounds” folder.
    2) Rename Picview1 and Picview2 to ‘Picview1’ and ‘Picview2’.
    3) ¡Done! Happy Gaming.

The game is pretty popular and was released in 2002 but there is no copy of it on the internet when at the same moment you can easily find and download a copy of an 80$ released like a month ago..
This game left histor behind itself and was one of the main games that were underrated and were caught between the hardware and software progression years where in that era gaming wasn’t as popular as it is now.
The movie is a great title by itself and we should aknowledge and recognize the game based on that.
Anyways i would love to play this game just for nostalgic reasons..

    Hi,

I was hoping you would be able to get an installation sorted for Harry Potter Quidditch World Cup.

It used to work fine on my old laptop that ran windows 7 OS, but when I try and run it on my new laptop I get the error message, “Not enough memory” because this laptop has too much supposedly. I tried installing one of my other old games with the installation you provided and it worked!
Therefore I was hoping you would be able to do the same with Harry Potter Quidditch World Cup.

    Many Thanks!

Hi, I also maintain a large collection of old PC games and one that I have been trying for a long time to fix is Ted Nugent’s Wild Hunting Adventure. It’s a rather obscure title but I played it when I was a kid so I want to play it again. I’ve tried dgvoodoo and it boots and works fine in the menus but the textures for the HUD show up as white rectangles and the polygons for the environment mesh show up as bright blue lines. I suppose it’s an alpha channel blending issue of some sort. Other wrappers don’t even allow the game to run so this should be quite the challenge.
